More About Gum Disease...

The word periodontal literally means "around the tooth." Periodontal disease (a.k.a. gum disease) is a chronic bacterial infection affecting the gums and the bones that support the teeth. Gum diseases such as periodontitis and gingivitis are serious infections that can eventually lead to tooth loss and other dental problems if not treated.

The mildest form of periodontal disease is gingivitis. A common symptom of this form of gum disease is that your gums will swell, redden or bleed easily; however, it generally causes little or no discomfort. Gingivitis is most commonly caused by inadequate oral hygiene, but it can be reversed through professional periodontal treatment and improved hygiene.

In addition to poor dental hygiene, periodontal disease may also be caused by genetics. Recent research has shown that up to 30% of the population may in fact be genetically susceptible to gum disease. Even with aggressive dental care practices, those with genetic susceptibilities may be up to six times more likely to develop periodontal diseases.

If you are diagnosed with periodontitis, surgery may be recommended by a periodontist. Periodontal surgery becomes necessary when the tissue around your teeth has become so unhealthy that it cannot be repaired through any non-surgical treatments.

It is possible to identify early stages of gum disease through a genetic test before any visible signs of infection. You will then be able to get early interceptive treatment that can help you keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime.
