More About Whitening...

Teeth whitening is a process that lightens and removes stains from your teeth. During the process, the enamel and dentin are bleached. Dentin is a calcareous material that is similar to bone, although harder and more dense. It is what composes the principal mass of a tooth. Thus, when the dentin is bleached it will lighten the discoloration on the teeth.

People are often curious about what causes tooth discoloration. There are many things that cause it. The most common cause include the consumption or use of staining substances (e.g. tea, coffee, soda, tobacco products, etc.), trauma, aging, nerve degeneration, too much fluoride, and tetracycline (antibiotic) staining.

Is a tooth whitening system safe? Fortunately, the answer is yes. There are many dentists who feel that the teeth bleaching process is the safest cosmetic procedure available to people today. Research and clinical studies have shown that whitening teeth with hydrogen peroxide and/or carbamide peroxide, provided it is done under the supervision of your dentist, is completely safe for your teeth and gums.
